Van Buren couple welcomes cats rescued from Florida

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — In the past few years, by the time late January rolled around, the Central Aroostook Humane Society typically would have 100 or more cats at the shelter, all in need of a good home.

Ark Animal Sanctuary

We thought we would give you another update on our progress with the new building. Due to the cold weather it has been slow, but the good news is that the furnace is now in and hooked up! This means our workers can stay warm and get more accomplished.

The sheetrock will start going up in a few days. We are so excited; is really starting to look like a sanctuary. We are counting every penny and making sure that we are getting the most bang for our buck. This is why we only have a few people working on the building and they are doing it after they finish working their full-time jobs.

Animal shelter retires mortgage with grant

HOULTON, Maine — Thanks to a local trust fund, the Houlton Humane Society is paying off its mortgage nine years ahead of schedule.

Heather Miller, executive director for the shelter, said last week that the HHS was the recipient of $84,000 from the Aaron P. Putnam Trust Fund. It is the single largest donation the shelter has ever received, Miller said.

“This was very unexpected,” Miller said. “I was standing in the post office with tears in my eyes when I opened the letter. We are so appreciative.”
