VAN BUREN, Maine — On Wednesday, June 8, 2016, the Cleo Fund of Maine, in conjunction with the Fort Kent Animal Hospital, has offered to spay/neuter and vaccinate 30 cats from Van Buren with the work assistance of the Halfway Home Pet Rescue of Caribou.
I would like to invite you to a super fun event at the animal shelter on Saturday, June 11, beginning at 11 a.m. Houlton Humane is located on the Callaghan Road, if you have never been there, you go out the Ludlow Road past Walmart — two miles out you turn right on the Callaghan Road (it’s your second right) and the shelter is one mile in on the right.

Many of you have heard us talk about Keith our FIV (AIDS) kitty. Keith holds a very special place in our hearts; we love him dearly.
Keith came to The Ark about five or six years ago. He was found as a stray living on the streets in Pennsylvania and rescued by a very kind man. He took Keith to the vet and got him neutered and tested, only to find out that Keith was FIV-positive. This meant that Keith had to become an indoor kitty so he would not transmit the disease to other cats. This was all well and good until the gentleman decided to get married and his new wife was highly allergic to Keith.

As I write this I am looking forward to my first official meeting as chairman of the board of directors of the Houlton Humane Society. It’s like “going home”, a familiar place, familiar faces, and yet at the same time, not stale in any way, with a lot of excitement about the future, a lot of plans for upcoming events and a lot of happy stories about critters who have found new homes.
