Pet Talk

As you know, it’s been a long season for Houlton Humane and someone asked me the other day why we were still suffering the effects of one tragic event. I explained to her that a single mistake is like an atom bomb, it makes a big noise and then the fallout continues for months, sometimes years. It takes a very long time for the air to clear.

Taking analogies one step further, it’s very much like being married, finding out your partner did something unforgivable, divorcing, and then blaming the new spouse every chance you get. He had nothing to do with the first event, but your anger is still there so you take it out on someone who had nothing to do with it.

Pet Talk

Some time ago Houlton Humane conducted an internal audit of finances. Following the internal audit it was determined that we should contract for a full CPA audit in order to assure the public that their donations to Houlton Humane Society were secure, used for the purpose intended, and not diverted in any way.

That audit was recently completed and the results are available for review at the shelter.

Ark Animal Sanctuary

Two weeks ago we received a call about a little black kitten that was found in a garbage can and was trying to get out. We immediately put the wheels in motion to go and get the kitten. One of our volunteers was on the road within 15 minutes of the phone call.

The kitten arrived at the Ark and was terrified. It was no more than 5 weeks old, was covered in fleas and smelt of diesel oil. We noticed she was basically a walking skeleton; you could feel every bone in her body and she was dehydrated. We treated her for fleas and hydrated her and started to force feed her, and then we hit the road to the vet.
