Aroostook County has a large population of bear, and the numbers are increasing each year while the fall hunting season harvests are not. State biologists estimate at least 36,000 black bear throughout the state and a large percentage occupy the Crown of Maine.

Dry fly crazy: a fish tale

The noise and hubbub slowly quieted as the judge banged his gavel to restore order after the charges were read. An oddly dressed man rose at the front of the courtroom. Hip waders, fishing vest, creel and net and a felt hat ornamented with numerous sizes and colorful patterns of flies set his appearance.

Salmon Season

The intriguing thing about fishing for landlocked salmon in Maine as opposed to trawling from a canoe or river fishing is that it is the closest one gets to Western-style trout fly-fishing. Though we are on a closed freshwater stream — a dam farther downstream forms East Grand Lake — we use the same lightweight tackle and similar small lures.

The entire month of June offers top-rate brook trout fishing all along the Aroostook River, perhaps the most dependable and constant action of the entire season. Best of all, regardless of your style of fishing — worm rigs, fly casting, tossing lures or trolling — everyone will catch trout and often some large ones.
