A natural treasure in our neighborhood

To the editor:

Thanks to Aislinn Sarnacki for reminding us in the Aug. 19 BDN 1-Minute Hike about the treasure so near to me: the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone. I drove over to walk the Don Lima trail, which was featured in the 1-Minute Hike. I observed a horned owl, which was well camouflaged, sitting on a dead tree.

The working women of World War II

     To the editor:

American Rosie the Riveter Association is trying to locate women who worked on the homefront during World War II. Thousands of women worked to support the war effort as riveters, welders, electricians, inspectors in plants, sewing clothing and parachutes for the military, ordnance workers, rolling bandages, clerical, farming, and many other jobs such as volunteer workers collecting scrap metals and other critical materials. These women have stories of their WWII experiences that are of historical value and perhaps have never been told. American Rosie the Riveter Association would like to acknowledge these women with a certificate and have their stories placed in our Archives.

Pet letter requires response

To the editor:
I would like to respond to the letter to the editor that was published in the August 10, 2016, Star-Herald entitled, “ Pets deserve special attention.” The letter expressed the writer’s concern for my dog being in my car all day while I was at work.

Rep. Saucier is optimal nominee for our economy

Rep. Saucier is optimal nominee for our economy

To the editor:
In two terms at the state legislature, Representative Robert (Bob) Saucier has established an impressive record of tireless advocacy for Aroostook’s economic interests. The best by far of any recent representative for Presque Isle from the opposing party, this record makes Bob the outstanding candidate for a third term.

Our pathway through life

Our pathway through life

To the editor:
We are all aware, “There is a time to be born and a time to die.” We have no choice whether to accept life or not, but once life begins, then how we live our lives is our choice.

Poliquin is hypocritical

To the editor:

Recently Congressman Poliquin proposed a bill to target food stamp fraud, saying he wanted to stop people from cheating the system and that he wanted to save “precious, limited taxpayer money for those who truly need it.” But consider the fact that Poliquin has just been caught paying his taxes late dozens of times, and he abused a loophole he created in the Maine Tree Growth Program to pay almost no taxes on his multi-million dollar property.

Pioneer helps make sense of memories

To the editor:

In May, 2015, the Pioneer printed my letter, “Richness of Memory,” about Aroline Howard, whose sister Annie married my father’s first cousin Brayley Webb, of Island Falls. I was concerned because my niece, a genealogist, said that no one living remembered Aroline. Discovering that I, with a memory from the age of about 6, was now the only one living, challenged me: there must be someone else.
