Thanks to the Lions

Thanks to the Lions

To the editor:
I woke early on a rainy Sept. 11, 2016, in Mapleton and had my first cup of coffee. The dreary morning was transformed for me when I looked out my window to see the beautiful red, white and blue flags blowing in the breeze.

Dangerous intersection(s) need attention

To the editor:
As a resident of Presque Isle now for 48 years and residing those years at our Dupont Street location, which is just a few short feet from the recent accident at the intersection of Cedar and Dudley streets, I wish to comment on the issues presented and high risk of accidents that intersection has seen over the years.

Forced to take free parking away

To the editor:

I’ve been dreading writing this letter which is odd because I’ve been writing it in my head over and over for months while unsuccessfully trying to get to sleep. My parents used to say, “This hurts me more than it does you” when giving us discipline. I didn’t believe them then and don’t expect you to believe me when I tell you how much this hurts, but it does. It really does.

So, I recently bought a movie theater. However, along with the cinema there came a pretty big parking lot. I opened it up for the town to use freely and for free because the week I arrived I saw in the Pioneer that the downtown had a parking problem. I figured that the Town Council would see what a benefit it would be for area businesses and for events held in Market Square to have it available.

My Veteran’s Day dream

To the editor:

It was nearly three years ago, that “Wreaths of Remembrance” was started. My family and I, began our new Veteran’s Day tradition of placing wreaths on the graves of every veteran buried in our town cemetery. It began with only a small family group, and a local U.S. Navy veteran, but now I have a dream for it. A dream that envisions cemeteries, in small towns and large cities, all across America. And in every cemetery, on each Veteran’s grave, a flag-decorated balsam wreath has been placed.

My dream is to see the project spread, through a grassroots movement of dedicated Americans joining from town to town, and state to state, until ‘Wreaths of Remembrance” stretches from here to the West Coast. You see, I don’t want to just decorate one town cemetery … I want all cemeteries to be decorated, but to do that we need more members volunteering to help us.

Mining rules fight far from over

To the editor:

It’s official, the metallic mining rules fight is back on again. I have a question for all of you: are you getting tired of watching as your often voiced opinions on the future of our wild places are continually dismissed by an administration that seems hell bent on destroying them? I know I am.

Taking the high road

To the editor:

On the afternoon of September 1, 2016, I delivered to the Presque Isle offices of the Democratic and Republican parties, multiple copies of A Covenant for Civil Discourse. The Covenant is part of a larger resource document prepared for churches and clergy by the Maine Council of Churches.
