Collins makes a fine point

To the editor:

Once again, Sen. Susan Collins has demonstrated her character, integrity and courage in an Op-Ed in The Washington Post on Aug. 8, 2016, in which she tells in
detail why she cannot, in good conscience, vote for Donald Trump.

A proud welcome home

To the editor:

I want to thank all the Hodgdon area men and women who worked so very much to ready the Hodgdon cemetery for Jewett Williams’ arrival home.

Thank you to those who delivered him home to his two sets of grandparents, to his parents, Rosaline Jackins and Jared Williams. Thank you to the wonderful military groups who gave all of us a ceremony we will never forget, and thank you to those who provided an after-service refreshment.

Jewett Williams was the very last CIvil War veteran to be finally interred. He is home where he wished to be and deserved to be, honored by all.

Going off marked trail hurts all

To the editor:

When a landowner grants permission to ATV and/or Snowmobile Club members to cross their property, they do so with the understanding that their rights and land will be respected. When someone leaves the designated trail, that exceeds the permission the landowner has granted.

Such is the case a couple of times over the summer. One incident resulted in a visit by a game warden to the violator. The other incident resulted in the landowner becoming very upset and threatening to close down all trails that run through his property. If this had happened, it would have crippled a major portion of our trail system.

Common Ground is the place to be

Common Ground is the place to be

To the editor:
Instead of a leaking toxic mine at Bald Mountain, Aroostook County citizens could consider what other individuals are doing to lead the path to the future creating sustainable communities.

Much more to the ambulance story

Much more to the ambulance story

To the editor:
As many are aware by now, the collaborative agreement between TAMC’s Crown Emergency Care and the City of Presque Isle expired on September 15 after having been extended from the initial end of the contract in July. Crown is still providing quality care for city residents and will continue to do so until the City has their own 9-1-1 service in place.

Remembering Gorby

To the editor:

The Trump Putin lawn signs and T-shirts remind me of a time when some American people, not politicians, were ready to rally for a Russian president. In the 1980s President Ronald Reagan was media-depicted as bumbling and needing to be scripted before he opened his mouth – well before his Alzheimer’s was revealed. General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, visited the U.S. for the first time in December, 1987.

Questions surround Civil War veteran’s reputation

To the editor:

Reading an article in the Bangor Daily News this week about Acting Police Chief Daniel Pelletier arresting a Houlton town councilor on charges of domestic violence assault, I was struck by the irony and the timing.

Last week, I wrote to Chief Pelletier to make him aware of what I believed was an inappropriate use of his department’s staff and equipment in the motorcade/parade being held next weekend to honor and celebrate the return of Civil War veteran Jewett Williams to Hodgdon.

The Don’s underworld

To the editor:

When Don Trump chose to use the cheaper building material of ready-mix concrete over structural steel for the erection of his Trump Tower, he knowingly put himself at the mercy of a Mafia cartel. As a result of this cost-saving decision, the Don had no choice but to deal with the four New York Mafia crime families that controlled all contracts on the delivery of concrete for over $2 million. Don Trump reportedly shelled out $22 million on the concrete used to build Trump Tower.

A very rough week

A very rough week

To the editor:
Her name was Jean Berger. She had a passion that would put most to shame. She recited her wedding vows over her husband’s casket. I am ashamed that I don’t know more about her, but here’s who she was to me: a second Mom.
