Palliative care increases quality of life

To the editor:

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it is often life-changing. The fear, anxiety and pain that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of a chronic disease can take a toll on one’s quality of life. As doctors focus on treating the disease, side effects like these are sometimes overlooked.

Marathon a class act

I ran the Caribou Half Marathon on Sunday. Caribou can be proud of the tremendous effort, by a small army of volunteers, who hosted the Caribou Marathon and Half Marathon.

The Constitution Party

To the editor:

I know that you have been told repeatedly, incessantly and continually that you can not vote for any but the two major party candidates because to do otherwise is “a wasted vote,” or that “it helps so-and-so get elected.” It is time for us all to reassess what those types of claims really do.

Another side of Islam

Another side of Islam

To the editor:
You may think that this is not local news, but this event has affected me and others locally indirectly and significantly. If this information were to go viral by any means, it could begin the transformation of Islam as well into a loving, creative, beloved force in the world.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

To the editor:
Will your life change if you lose a loved one? Will you have any kind of financial hardship if you lose someone unexpectedly? National statistics tell us that only 44 percent of people have individually owned life insurance and 60 percent think it’s too expensive. This is very untrue!

Longtime family business appreciates loyal customers

To the editor:

There comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book. After 93 years in business, the time has come for Town & Country Clothing and Footwear to close its book, which we will do in December, and for the Hutchinson family to begin a new chapter in life. As we begin this process, we look back with pride and gratitude for many years as an integral part of both Houlton and its downtown business community.

In 1923, Town & Country began its story selling clothing out of a horse-drawn cart, later turning into an Army Navy Surplus store.

Letter dishonored Pvt. Williams

To the editor:

I take offense at that letter from Linda Williams in last week’s paper dishonoring Pvt. Williams just before he was to be buried. It could have a negative impact on the ceremony.

The letter states that he was this and he was that in 1871, when divorced. This man had been through five battles including Gettysburg, who knows what happened to him?

Carpenter is best to represent Aroostook

To the editor:

Mike Carpenter, candidate for State Senate, has a long and distinguished record of public service to Maine and Aroostook that goes back to his time as a Captain in Vietnam. He served 12 years in the Maine Legislature, first in the House and then the Senate, where he served as a member of the agriculture, transportation, and judiciary committees. His judicial expertise is further enhanced by experience as the State Attorney General, and by his private law practice.

In addition, he is the owner of Acadia Carriages that provides him with understanding of the needs of Maine businesses. All of his experience makes him the best qualified candidate to understand the most pressing economic, legal, and ethical problems of Aroostook and Maine.
