Voters need accurate information to be able to make a decision about who to vote for. The best way for voters to understand a candidate’s values and where they stand on issues is to hear directly from the candidate.

With the November elections quickly approaching most people have been discouraged by the state of our national politics.

To the editor:

As a longtime advocate of print news and a faithful subscriber to the Houlton Pioneer Times, this letter is a difficult one for me to write. It doesn’t come easy to criticize an institution I’ve admired for years.

To me, a local newspaper is a vital informational tool for a community and does much to define the essence of small town life. Until recently, I thought the Pioneer captured that in spades, truly living up to the motto, “The only newspaper in the world interested in Houlton, Maine.” How I love that slogan!

With the November elections quickly approaching most people have been discouraged by the state of our national politics. Luckily the people of northern Maine have a number of qualified candidates for both the Maine House and Senate. One of these candidates is Mike Carpenter, who is running for State Senate.

Mr. Carpenter is one of the most qualified candidates running for office in the State of Maine. He has previously served in the Maine House of Representative and the Maine Senate. While in the Senate he served on the agriculture, judiciary, and transportation committees and later served as assistant majority leader.

We have long respected and admired Mike Carpenter. He is perhaps the most qualified candidate running for Senate anywhere in the state of Maine. Beginning in the 1970s, Mike represented Aroostook County by serving two years in the House, then 10 years in the Senate. Later, in the 1990s, the Maine Legislature elected Mike to the office of Maine Attorney General in which he served five years.

In America, there are certain things we do without giving a lot of thought about why exactly we do them. In October we dress our children in elaborate costumes and send them out to panhandle candy from neighbors. In December, we prop up dead trees in our living rooms and festoon them with ornaments and electric lights. Sometime in March or April, we hide perishable food around the house and then encourage the children to find it all before it spoils. In the heat of summer, we go outside with a supply of gunpowder and matches and play with these explosives until they run out, and consider it a good time if we exhaust the supply before someone gets injured.

Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) is an area leader in providing a wide range of services to citizens across Aroostook County. To help ensure that the services they deliver are directed to the areas of highest need, ACAP is conducting a comprehensive community assessment. Aroostook County residents, like yourself, can help influence their planning efforts for the agency as well as help to determine which regional needs receive the most attention.

A simple observation from a simple man, about Question 3. Why does this issue have to be so complicated? Quite simply put without any confusion.

If you transfer ownership of a firearm, then it should be documented with a background check. That way the buyer becomes the registered owner, relieving the seller of any future responsibilities pertaining to that firearm.
