Thanking the town for their support

To the editor:

Words cannot even begin to describe how thankful we are to live in such a caring and giving community. Your outpouring of support and kindness is truly amazing.

When things get tough, no one is afraid to lend a helping hand. Simon has a long road ahead of him, but thanks to all of your support, this road will be a bit less burdensome.

Vigils for peace continue

To the editor:

As we approach the birthday of the Prince of Peace, Jesus’ own ways and teachings of non-violence come to the fore in Pope Francis’ important statement released Dec. 12, 2016 entitled: “Non-violence — a Style of Politics for Peace.”

In a world streaming with refugees from the terrors of war, this welcome message will be delivered verbally by the Pope on Jan. 1, 2017 — the annual World Day of Peace.

It’s the thought that counts

To the editor:

I often hear people complaining about Christmas gifts they receive — ties they never wear, hand-knit sweaters that don’t fit or are awful in design, another pair of slippers they have to “ooh” over and then stuff in the closet along with last year’s, a fruitcake they’ll eventually throw away, or any number of other gifts they have to pretend they like.

Open-pit mining at Bald Mountain is too risky

To the editor:
Risks we humans, both individually and collectively, take with social justice, our environment, our economy, and our politics are too often made on the basis of perceived possibility of limited and temporary gains than on evidence-based probability of harm.

Misleading headline

To the editor:
The headline “State Geologist Favors Smart Mining” in last week’s Star-Herald was misleading — and is exactly what we do not need from the press.

One nation under God

To the editor:

It was not long ago that the quarterback for the San Francisco 49er’s, Colin Kaepernick, was steeped in controversy for his decision to sit down on the National Anthem in protest over his perceived belief that African-Americans are unjustly treated by our police forces. There was definitely a strong backlash for his choosing to use our highly esteemed National Anthem that is symbolic of our patriotism for our flag, for our Veterans, for all the soldiers throughout our wars who gave their lives to defend our nation and for the freedom we enjoy and the principles of our democracy.

Oil pipelines put water at risk

The protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline (by the Standing Rock Sioux and others) are a demand for safety, and an insistence on reducing risks for current and future generations.

Remembering Kay

To the editor:

Seeing Kay Bell on the front page was first, OMG with shock and sadness; then gladness that she had lived so long, healthy and sharp; and finally, gratitude for the article by Joe Cyr, which, with the obituary, took us back in time and reminded us of her full, satisfying and productive life.
