The cereal tree and the gift of givingThe cereal tree and the gift of giving

To the editor:

As a proud employee of ACAP, and an active participant of the Cereal Tree Project, it warmed my heart to see the over 1,100 tickets put into our basket by the community, cementing the amazing donation from Scott Carlin and Star City IGA of 250 Cereal Boxes to help some of our Aroostook families. Every child enrolled in an ACAP early care and education program brought home a box of cereal before the holiday break.

Persons behind changes in Pioneer should explain them

To the editor:

I have put off writing this ever since Sue Tortello complained about changes in the Pioneer in her Oct. 19 letter to the editor. She covered most of what I might have written and it seemed as if all editors involved would note the content. However, I do have a different perspective, having seen changes in local papers (daily and weekly, different publishers) in the Rochester area.

What is the LDA smoking?

To the editor:

Judging from an item in the Dec. 14 Republican it looks for all the world like we’re about due for another outbreak of Vahlsing disease. Loring Development Administration President Carl W. Flora is already infected, showing classic signs of boundless enthusiasm over some mysterious scheme for which he could not provide any details, but would require complete refurbishing of at least five old, rusty metal buildings at the cost of $5 million. Despite having no knowledge of the nature of this grand new industrial scheme, or what working skills would be needed, he predicts it could create 350 jobs in four years and up to 750 jobs after eight years. But first — and here’s the catch — local sources would have to come up with “matching funds” of $2.5 million.

Legislative update

To the editor:

I recently had the honor of being sworn in as the senator for Maine’s District 1. While I have been here before, it’s still a great feeling to be back in the Senate chamber, greeting my old friends and meeting some new ones.

Tis the season

To the editor:

During this busy season, many of us are busy shopping and decorating for the upcoming holidays. Houses decorated with brilliantly colorful lights can be seen and admired by the masses. Some of these displays can truly be spectacular. But, there is another type of lights that I want to remind you about as we scurry around town trying to finish or, if you’re like me, begin your holiday shopping.
