I am writing in support of the Endangered Species Act, and in opposition to efforts by Congress to undermine this landmark wildlife conservation law.
This is in regard to the [“Walkabout: Aroostook”] article on driving. I agree it is sad how some people drive today, especially since cellphones came into existence.

People always say “There’s nothing to do in The County.” I however don’t think that’s true.
The following is a letter in response to why trees won’t thrive in the downtown area of Houlton (reported in the July 31 edition). The article said it was a mystery that nobody so far can solve.
Senator Susan Collins has once again proven that she is working for the people of Maine by securing funding to fix the bridge that connects Madawaska to Edmunston, New Brunswick.
In September 1993, I left my corporate life in San Francisco, on a cross-country adventure in a Volkswagen camper. On Oct. 1, I drove into Maine and eventually Houlton for the first time.

The annual Fourth of July parade is over. Vendors pull out. Visiting family and friends ebb away and return to their homes. The town goes back to normal — being quiet. We hear the news that most of America’s rural communities are doomed to decline. We hear that rural life is fading away. We hear that rural older adults as well as younger ones are hit hard by opioid epidemic. When hope seems lost, where do we find hope in the rural community?

This has been an unusually busy week for Halfway Home Pet Rescue, and unfortunately a very unhappy week as kittens have been discovered abandoned on some country roads.
