Caribou area From our Files – Week of October 28, 2019

115 Years Ago -Oct. 26,  1904
Telephone poles — New telephone poles are being placed in position this week on North Main Street, the line extending as far as Mr. Gagnon’s store, about seven miles out. It is the intention of the telephone company to extend the line through to Van Buren.

     Opened to the public — The Cary Library opened to the public last week and is being liberally patronized by the public. New books are arriving daily. Miss Anna Barnes is the librarian in charge.

115 Years Ago – Oct. 19,1904
Potato picker — A dispatch from Monticello claims that Warren Brocker has made a new world’s record picking potatoes, having picked 150 barrels in nine and a half hours. This is not equal to the feat performed by a Caribou boy, Frank Bishop, who picked 148 barrels in about seven hours while working for John B. Lyon.

Presque Isle area From our Files – Week of October 14, 2019

Presque Isle was well over the top in the Fourth Liberty Loan drive. With a quota of $244,300, her subscription totalled $151,350, a good showing, creditable to those who subscribed and also creditable to those in charge of the campaign.

115 Years Ago – Oct. 14, 1904
     New owner — Mr. Geo. Niles has recently purchased the White Front Shoe stock and will continue to carry on the business at the same stand. Mr. Niles is thoroughly familiar with the boot and shoe business and is worthy of his share of patronage.
