Houlton area From our Files – Week of June 22, 2020

100 Years Ago – June 30, 1920
     Returns home — Wm. H. Higgins, who formerly drove a public carriage here but recently of Bath, Maine, where he has been employed in the shipyards, has returned to Houlton where he expects to remain if he can buy a home.

Caribou area From our Files – Week of June 22, 2020

115 Years Ago – June  28,  1905
Hotel — C.H. Merrill is pushing work on his new Vaughn House. The contract calls for $15,000 worth of work. The old house was three stories. Plans call for a fourth story and will contain 80 guest rooms and 20 bathrooms.

100 Years Ago – June 23, 1920
     Making improvements — Earle & White, owners of the Exchange Block, are making some improvements in the rear of their block. They have torn down the three-story ell and will also open up a driveway between that and the stable which will reduce the fire risk very materially.

St. Pierre promoted to corporal — At the headquarters, Pacific Division, Air Transport Command, it was announced that Wilfred St. Pierre of Presque Isle, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Zelix St. Pierre, was promoted to Corporal in the United States Army Air Forces,

75 Years Ago –  June 14, 1945
Special prize at Kents Hill — The 121st commencement at Kents Hill was held Sunday, June 3, when 27 seniors received their diplomas. Jacqueline Colbath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Colbath of this city, received the Knowles prize awarded annually to the outstanding senior in scholarship and other merits.

     Opening of park — The grand opening of Crescent Park took place on Wednesday evening, June 16, at which time there was dancing with music by Bryson’s full orchestra.

Lillian Blanchard at Brooke General — Lillian E. Blanchard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vinton Blanchard of Presque Isle, a member of the Women’s Army Corps, left First WAC Training Center at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, for technical training at Brooke General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
