Houlton area From our Files – Week of February 8, 2021

 100 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1921
Houlton Trust Co. purchased Masur Block — At a special meeting of the stockholders of the Houlton Trust Co. held on Friday, it was voted to purchase the property on the corner of Market Square, known as the Masur Block. The property will be transferred to its new owners this week.

Cassidy honored at Augusta — Walter Cassidy, chairman of Local Board No. 2, was in Augusta and recieved a medal, along with other draft board officials of the state, for volunteer work done during the war.

New office — George Barnes has moved his office in the Trust Company block where he was to the offices formerly occupied by Mrs. Henry Smart, better known as Margaret’s Hat Shop.

James White to attend teachers college in Conn. — James White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice White of this city, received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army after nearly four years service, including one and one half years in the ETO.

 100 Years Ago – Jan. 27, 1921
New deputy — Miss Bessie Pierce of Mars Hill has been appointed by Sheriff Edmund Grant to deputy sheriff for Aroostook County. This is the first time in the state of Maine that a woman was nominated for the position.

School nurse — With the introduction of a registered school nurse in the public school in Houlton, this marks a step upward and it hopes to demonstrate the need for a regular school nurse to be added to the faculty.

Food sale in Stockholm — A food sale was held at the high school with a variety of homemade food including cakes, breads and candy. The proceeds will be used to purchase a piano for the school.
