Named to the State PMA Committee — Appointment of Harry E. Umphrey of Presque Isle to the Main State Committee of the Production and Marketing Administration by Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson had been announced by Fred J. Nutter, state director of PMA.

115 Years Ago – Jan. 5, 1907
Meeting of publishers — A meeting of the publishers of the different papers in the county met at the Star Herald office in Presque Isle Monday and organized the Aroostook Publishers Association. G.H. Collins of the Star-Herald was chosen president and L.J. Pendell of the Republican, secretary.

115 Years Ago – Jan. 9, 1907
Rockabema Lodge — Rockabema Lodge I.O.O.F. have elected the following officers for the ensuing year: N.G., Chas. A. Lyons; V.G.O.A. Jacobs; secretary, C.B Whitcomb; treasurer, Geo. H. Wiggin. Mr. C. L. Fox who has been secretary of the lodge during the last 10 years, was obliged to resign the office this year on account of poor health. The installation takes place on Thursday night.

Mars Hill paper — Volume one, number one of the Mars Hill View made its appearance last week. It is a five column, eight page paper and presents a neat appearance and is well supplied with local reading. It is well welcomed to Aroostook journalism.

Unemployment bureau — A further step to relieving unemployment in Houlton this winter and providing work for those in need was taken this week with the establishment of an Unemployment Registration Bureau at the office of the Selectmen.

75 Years Ago –   Dec. 26, 1946
New “Y” Secretary in Northern Maine — State YMCA Secretary Chester A. Baker announced that Morrill Walker Paine of Troy, New York, accepted the position of associate secretary of the State YMCA to be in charge of the Northeast District YMCA, which included all of Aroostook County and the northern parts of Penobscot and Washington counties.

75 Years Ago –   Dec. 19, 1946
Pritham named Presque Isle Water and Sewer Districts superintendent — Carroll D. Pritham, of Presque Isle, began his new duties as superintendent of the Presque Isle Water and Sewer Districts. Mr. Pritham gave his notice as electrical engineer with the Maine Public Service Co.

Leon Howe resigns — Leon Howe who has been connected with the IRS in charge of the income tax department in Aroostook completed his work this week in Aroostook County. He has accepted a new position with the Buffalo Fertilizer Branch of I.A.C. and will take up his new duties in Houlton next Monday.

Hardware store opens at new site — S.E. Briggs, having purchased Duff & Smith’s stock of hardware, will be found at his new place of business on Sweden Street where he will see his friends and customers as the new location opens.

Railroad expansion — A petition is ongoing for a 145-mile branch of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad which, if built, will open up a large lumbering and sporting territory for the area.
