75 Years Ago – Sept. 11, 1947
Maxwell Hayden new Community Chest president — Maxwell M. Hayden was elected president of the Presque Isle Community Chest at a meeting of the board of directors, to succeed Orrin J. Bishop; and Harold Glidden was named chairman of the annual campaign for funds.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 4, 1947
New post with Maine Potato Growers — Harold E. Bryant, General Manager of Maine Potato Growers Inc., announced that Henry Lowe of Brooks, Maine, who was formerly employed by Maine Potato Growers, as manager of the Seed Department, had been employed to take charge of building and maintaining a distribution set-up for farm supplies and farm machinery.

Telephone injuries — Some time ago the telephone was installed in nearly every farmhouse. Since then the women have used the phones by the hour, standing in a position which throws their heads to the left side.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 4, 1947
$5,000 fire In Amity — A fire which started in the chimney of Fred Oliver’s home in Amity Thursday afternoon spread through the entire house before help could reach the scene. The flames quickly spread to the barn and out sheds, according to James McIntosh, fire warden, who was first called to the farm.

Madigan gets recognition — One of Maine Polio Reconstruction Centers- A well – organized and enthusiastic group of the first division appeal solicitors for the Madigan Memorial Hospital Appeal Fund began activities Tuesday. Under the leadership of James B. Callnan, a rally was staged at Fitzpatrick’s newly-opened dance pavilion Monday evening.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 28, 1947
Nearly 190 at the second clinic — One hundred and eighty-seven children received a total of 426 doses of immunization at the second pre-school clinic held at the Community Recreation Center, Mrs. Louise Terrill, City Health Nurse, announced. Ninety-four were attending the clinic for the first time, and the remaining 93 had attended the first clinic in the series and returned for their second shots.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 21, 1947
Seeley candidate for scholarship — Richard Seeley, a pitcher on the Presque Isle Junior Legion team, was one of three Maine candidates for a Henry Ford Scholarship at Boston University, according to an announcement by officials of the Ray Goding post. Two of the three Maine boys were selected for scholarships. Dick went to Boston with all expenses paid to compete for the scholarship.

75 Years Ago – August 21, 1947
Softball league tied entering final week – The Recreation Department’s softball league for men is entering the final week of play with the Dux Club tied with the VFW for the No. 1 position. The Dux lost a very close game, and one of the better ball games of the season, to the Odd Fellows and dropped out of the undefeated class into a tie with the Vets.

115 Years Ago – Aug. 22, 1907
On his way to New York — J.B. Halgren of New Sweden started Monday for New York on a business trip. Before coming home he will make a visit in Connecticut; he will also visit in Newport, Rhode Island, the Swedish armored cruiser Fylgia, which brought Prince Wilhelm, grandson of King Oscar, to this country.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1947
Eighty attended Aroostook and Florida picnic — More than 80 attended the Aroostook-Florida picnic at the Aroostook Valley Park. Mrs. Charles Jameson was chairman of the program, which included group singing led by George P. Findlen of Fort Fairfield, piano-accordion selections by Janet Higgins of Mapleton, an address by Clifford McIntire of Perham, and humorous readings by Mrs. Charles Everett, Mars Hill.
