75 Years Ago – Oct. 2, 1947
Pilot has narrow escape in crash — Bertrand L. Foster, 32, of Houlton had a narrow escape from electrocution Sunday afternoon when the Cessna A-5 he was bringing in to land at the Airport here cracked up and became entangled with live wires near the farm of Elbert A. Dow on the Foxcroft Road.

Indoor archery returns — The archery range is back to its old winter quarters again at the old armory on Mechanics Street. It will be open each Friday evening and there will be competent instructors for those who wish to learn this fascinating sport. Target fees will be 25 cents if use of the club equipment is desired, or 10 cents if one has his own.

115 Years Ago – Sept. 26, 1907
Returning from New York — Mrs. M. Frances Shaw will return this week from New York and Boston, where she has been to attend the openings of the leading hat shops. Mrs. Shaw, being unable to meet the demand of the public herself, will bring with her MIss Minnie Norton, who comes highly recommended, as a trimmer.

The Rotary inducted new members — The meeting of the Presque Isle Rotary Club was devoted to induction of two new members and reports of special committees. Past President Loren F. Carter welcomed Oscar H. Tagget and Byron S. Kempton as new members of the club.

Kermit Crandall named president of Country Club — Kermit Crandall of Presque Isle was elected president of the Aroostook Valley Country Club for the ensuing year at a meeting of the new directors at the club.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1947
Serious loss at Cone dairy farm — Damage which may reach $20,000 was caused to the large dairy barn on the farm of Walter Cone on the North Road Friday afternoon when fire of the undetermined origin broke out within warning and burned so fiercely that the building was badly gutted when the Houlton Fire Department arrived.

Sherman soldier wins first place — T/5 Gordon Lane, grandson of Mrs. Eldora Grant, in care of Ivan Hunt, Sherman, has won first place in the metal work section of the Army Special Services crafts contest semi-finals held recently at Philippine Ryukyus Command headquarters in Manila.
