Woods blaze is halted – A stubborn fight throughout the night brought under control a woods fire a half mile east of the Calais Road in Hodgdon Tuesday after damage estimated at $10,000 had been caused to buildings on the former Cary Taylor farm now occupied by Ted Parent.

Arthur Fairbanks received a 24-year award in Rotary — Arthur R. Fairbanks received an award for 24 years’ perfect attendance at the regular meeting of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, Monday noon at the Northeastland.

Hat buying trip — Miss Evelyn Fisher made a business trip to Boston Wednesday night and will return Friday morning. While there she will select a new lot of hats which will arrive at her store Saturday, Oct. 19.

Rotarians entertain Houlton Collegians– The members of the Houlton Collegians baseball team were guests of the Houlton Rotary Club at its regular meeting Monday noon and heard high praise from two speakers for their successful season during which they won 23 consecutive games.

Robert Hayden named secretary of Young Adults — Robert Hayden was elected executive secretary of the Young Adults recreation group at a meeting at the Community Recreation Center, and it was voted that the directors serve as a management committee and planning board. About 40 attended the Young Adults Night open house at the recreation center.

Under new management — The local business of the American Express Company, which has been under the charge of its regular agent, H.D. Collins, since the advent of the B. & A. into Caribou, is now under the charge of Mr. Hazleton of Dexter, a representative of the company.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 9, 1942
Junior college elects officers – Harold S. Boynton, a popular Ricker student and athlete, was elected president of the sophomore class at Ricker Junior College last Thursday. Boynton, receiver of last year’s Houlton Lions Club Prize for Athletics and Scholastics, is the son of Harry R. Boynton of Millinocket.

Resigns and accepts new position — Miss Lizzie Lavoie, who has been employed in A.V. Goud & Co.’s dry goods store, has resigned and accepted a position in the office of the Caribou Water, Light & Power Co.

Aroostook State Normal school faculty — Miss Luella Dunning assumed her duties as dean of women at Aroostook State Normal School, completing the faculty list at the school.
