Having a sale — J.C. McGrath is having a remarkable good sale on his Mic-Mac cigar — the leading 5-cent brand of the county. In one day last week he sold $500. He steadily employs a force of four hands, and it is hard work to keep up to the orders.

Fire causes $275 loss to lodging house — Halloween did not mean cider and cake to everyone in Houlton Friday. Mrs. Glenna L. Kirlin found herself faced with a $275 loss when others were planning parties and dances.

Sold the farm — Edgar W. Russ has sold his farm, perhaps better known as the Harris place, to Fred Blackstone of Washburn. This is considered to be one of the finest farms in this section, and is only two miles from the village.

Local Students Contest Winners — Two members of the senior class of Houlton High School were among six students chosen as winners at the first judging of the essay contest, “One World Through United Nations.” Principal Milton B. Lambert received word Wednesday that Ann Hannen and Wendell Peabody were two students chosen from the first district comprising the counties of Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo and Washington.

Upper Aroostook Valley teachers elected officers — The Upper Aroostook Valley Teachers’ Club met at the Central Building, Ashland, with nearly all the members present. The guest speaker was Raymond Bowden, guidance director at Presque Isle High School.

Reece is Houlton Youth Council president – The Youth Council, an advisory group assisting the Recreation Department, held its annual meeting for election of officers at the Recreation Center Thursday night and elected Paul Reece, a sophomore at high school, to lead the group for the 1947-1948 season.

$4,800 reported in Community Chest drive — Workers in the annual Presque Isle Community Chest campaign reported contributions of approximately $4,800 toward the goal of $16,950 as the drive swung into its second and final week, Harold D. Glidden, campaign chairman, announced.

Golfers received awards — Lloyd Hawkins, director of golf for the Presque Isle Athletic Association, presented the runner-up prize to Bud Survant for the handicap tourney at the banquet of the Presque Isle Golf Association.
