75 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1948
Students win essay honors – Several essays were submitted from Houlton High School in the contest sponsored by O. M. Doyle on the subject, “Of What Value is Fresh Fruit to the Health of Our Youth”. The contest was open to all students in this area. Wanda Way, from Houlton, won the first prize of $25.

75 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1947
Police start fingerprinting — Expansion of the work of the Houlton Police department started this week when Officer Carl Smart began operation of the fingerprinting equipment acquired some time ago. Henceforth every person jailed by the local police will be fingerprinted and the prints will be filed and recorded.

Gartley elected committee head  — Over 125 local members of the Aroostook County Agricultural Conservation Association elected Myron Gartley chairman of the community committee at an election at the Community Recreation Center.

Busy day — Tuesday was a busy day with Caribou merchants. Many traders report the Christmas business ahead of last year; and this, too, in a year when Aroostook is supposed not to have any money.

Elks ladies continue to hold league lead – At the end of the eighth week of bowling in the Women’s Bowling League, which is sponsored by the Houlton Recreation Department, the Elks women are still leading.

115 Years Ago – Dec. 19 1907
Movies come to town — A moving picture machine will soon be run in Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle, Caribou and other north Aroostook towns by G. Wilmot Gerow and June Loring, who will arrive in Fort Fairfield with it in a few days. They will work in northern Maine all winter, making Fort Fairfield their headquarters.

115 Years Ago – Aug. 29, 1907
Soon to be — H.O. Spencer, the Sweden street jeweler, who was some time ago appointed inspector of watches and clocks used on this division of the B&A railroad, received this week full requisites for the position, and hereafter all watches and clocks on this division will receive Mr. Spencer’s personal inspection.

Caribou area From our Files – Week of December 7, 2022

115 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1907
Work is being suspended for now — Work on the large house of W.A. Long on Collins street has been suspended until spring. This house is one of the largest in town, being 31 by 57 feet, three stories high and containing 23 rooms. The carpenter’s work has been under the supervision of J.C. Wright. The house is well made throughout, and  has a large barn attached.

75 Years Ago – Dec. 11, 1947
Ricker hoops win one, drop two – The Ricker Junior College Quintet opened their season with a victory over the Woodstock Senators, a loss to the Maine Maritime Academy, and one to the Emerson Pills of Millinocket. This Saturday evening in the Hodgdon High Gymnasium, the Ricker Raiders will entertain the Maine Maritime Club and seek their second win.
