100 Years Ago – March 1, 1923
County over the top — Cooperative marketing landed safely with a margin of some thousands to spare. Figures compiled by H. F. McGlauflin, Secretary of the local Cooperative Marketing Campaign Committee, showed the aggregate of signers in the County to be a fraction over 54,000. Presque Isle at the time of writing was credited with 4033 acres.

115 Years Ago – Feb. 27, 1908
Returned from extended trip — Mr. and Mrs. C. Powers returned last week from an extended trip to Wisconsin, Minnesota and other western states. Mr. Powers reports but very little snow in that section, and states that wheels were in use in nearly every place he was in.

Singer Sewing Machine Co. To Open New Store – The Singer Sewing Machine Company will return to Houlton after an absence of several years when they open their new modern store in the Putnam-Ervin block about March 15. It will be the company’s headquarters in Northern Maine.

Returned from Boston — H. H. Whitney, who has recently returned from Boston where he graduated from the Barnes’ Embalming School, has had the room on the west of his furniture store fitted for a casket room and has stocked it up with a good line of caskets.

Mr. Hews on a business trip — Mr. Ray Hews, one of the most progressive and enterprising young farmers of the County, returned Saturday from Piscataquis and Penobscot Counties, where he figured actively in several very enthusiastic co-operative meetings.

Houlton Man Leads Maine N.Y. Life Agents in ‘47 – Charles W. Harmon of Houlton, Maine, a representative of the New York Life Insurance Company, in 1947 for the third successive year led all agents of the company in the number of new applications for life insurance. It has been announced by Dudley Dowell, vice-president of the company.

Trip to Boston and New York — Ray N. L. Brown started Tuesday morning for Boston and New York where he will visit the markets for the purpose of selecting a spring and summer stock of goods for A. V. Goud & Co.’s dry goods store.

Ricker Wins And Loses Down State – Winning one and losing one was the story of the Ricker Junior College basketeers over the weekend. A pair of teams from Central Maine, M. C. I. at Pittsfield and the Cold Frosh at Waterville played hosts to the Aroostook Club.

Entertainment at the parsonage — Mrs. G. L. Pressey entertained the C. I. C. at the parsonage Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10. An oyster supper was enjoyed by the class. AFter supper, the following officers were elected: President, Nedra Pierce; Vice President, Goldie Rees; Secretary, Annie Dillen; Treasurer, Laura Garrison.
