Local Girl Named Aroostook Champion Speller in Caribou – Miss Byrna Mae Porter, 16- year-old Houlton High School Junior won the senior spelling contest and became the Aroostook County champion speller for the second straight year at the Caribou Winter Carnival

Maude Moring named most senior citizen — Maude Moring, born in 1917, was named the town’s “Most Senior Citizen” by the Ste-Agathe Historical Society and was presented a golden cane Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Montfort Heights.

Grocery chain’s campaign a success — Hannaford Bros. Co., parent company of Shop ’n Save and Hannaford supermarket, announced that its holiday fund-raising program, “The Joy of Sharing,” raised more than $70,000 for the Salvation Army.

Bird’s eye manager awarded cup — Estle Gallop, manager of the Houlton branch of the Bird’s eye Snider division of General Goods Corporation and Joseph D. Nevin, manager of the Caribou branch, were awarded cups at a company banquet in Houlton Friday emblematic of the safety record of their two plants during the past season.
