       I’m a senior, over age 63, and I recently found something rather refreshing in my local newspaper. It was an ad from a company encouraging seniors to apply for a customer service position.

Helping to make America more energy independent

    As we enter the summer, more and more Maine families are hitting the roads in recreational vehicles. Others are towing boats to enjoy our coast, lakes and rivers. These activities are part of our way of life, but they are getting harder and harder to afford. In Maine, drivers are paying on average three dollars a gallon for gas these days: that’s a lot of money and it really adds up.

Federal help for better cell phone coverage in Maine

 Chief Deputy Sheriff Everett Flannery of Kennebec County recently met with me to discuss the challenges that Maine’s inadequate network of cell phone towers poses for law enforcement. He was in Washington at the invitation of my colleague Senator Olympia Snowe to testify on this problem before the Senate Commerce Committee.

Aroostook County farming in the 1800s

    In 1860, U.S. Census enumerators counted 2,938 farms in Aroostook County, up from 1,228 farms in 1850. Improved (cleared) land increased from about 55,000 acres in 1850 to 124,117 acres in 1860. By 1880, the number of Aroostook County farms had increased to 5,802, with a total of 270,442 improved acres. Although these U.S. Census of Agriculture statistics are precise, their accuracy is unsure.

The Forum enters busy summer season

    As The Forum enters the summer season, a great many adjustments take place. Event set up criteria shift back to ice making for the two week summer season and all the equipment not used for ice will be inspected, serviced and/or repaired and stored for the next use.

    The secret is out. The County’s beautiful landscapes are a sight to behold while riding a bicycle.
    National and international bicycling enthusiasts are becoming acquainted with cycling opportunities both through the marketing efforts of Aroostook County Tourism (ACT) and from unsolicited articles being written about the region.

Wireless access for all

    The Universal Service Fund was created as a part of the 1996 Telecommunications Act in order to ensure that all Americans have reasonable access to communications services. This program has been a critical component in keeping Americans in rural parts of the country, like Maine, connected to essential wireless services.

    Your rural mail receptacle may be the most visited extension of your household, with deliveries up to six times per week. Is your box user friendly? Does it keep your mail dry and is it an adequate size for your needs and deliveries?
