Green cleaning in our back yard

  Got a stain on the floor to clean and still want to be green? You could start off with the “universal solvent” — water — but sometimes you need more. Here in Maine, industries have worked for years to reduce or eliminate hazardous chemicals once used to clean things, such as dirty engine parts.

    Reading the news, it can often seem that issues in Washington have become completely partisan. This can be discouraging to those of us who want to see real work get done to improve people’s lives.

Last Booth Standing

    So, what do (or is it does?) a telephone booth and an inflatable catcher’s chest protector have in common? Seems a little implausible for a relation to exist between those two very dissimilar and ordinary items, doesn’t it? And what, pray tell, would those two items have to do with our town anyway? Not much, for sure, but keep your eyes glued to the story below and I’ll attempt to weave a relationship.

The importance of seeking common ground

   As this session of Congress comes to a close and we begin August recess, it is important to look back and reflect on the successes of the past few months.  A few achievements include the bipartisan legislation recently passed by the Senate to reauthorize the State Children Health Insurance Program and the consensus the Senate came to on increasing fuel efficiency standards earlier this summer

   “If you see something, say something.” That is the message adorning the New York City subway, urging passengers to report suspicious activity. In Washington, the United States Capitol Police have asked those who work on Capitol Hill to pay close attention to their environment to “help be the eyes and ears with our local law enforcement.”

A new energy independence plan

    Earlier this month, the House of Representatives took a huge step forward in transforming our national energy policy by passing the “New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act”.

A lesson in democracy

    Recently, I welcomed to Washington four outstanding high-school students from Maine — our state’s delegates to Boys and Girls Nation. Coral Sandler of South Portland, Katherine Rhames of Biddeford, Greg Jensen of Falmouth, and Justin Rouse of Eliot joined delegates from throughout the country for an invaluable week-long experience in citizenship and government. It was a great pleasure to meet them.

Newly renovated facility has eight-year history

    On Saturday July 21st the Presque Isle Public Works department held a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the opening of its newly renovated facility. The ribbon cutting marked the culmination of eight years of searching, planning and building support for the project.
