    As the trees begin to turn and summer gives way to fall, this is a question that is being asked more and more. The short answer is that the project is on schedule and under budget.

Seeing our VA System from the inside

   This past week I led a Congressional delegation to visit the Minneapolis Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. The mission of Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Polytrauma System of Care is to provide high quality medical care, rehabilitation, and support services for veterans and active duty service members who have sustained multiple injuries in service to our country.

Maine Troop Greeters, the very best of Maine

Early Aug. 25, our own Maine Troop Greeters warmly welcomed Spc. Tommitrea Minnifee of the 546th Area Support Medical Company as the 500,000th soldier they have greeted at Bangor International Airport (BIA). This half-million milestone was the culmination of four years of dedication and perseverance by Mainers who have traveled to the airport terminal day and night to meet America’s heroes traveling to and from Iraq since 2003.

Star City’s diligence pays dividends

Its death has been greatly exaggerated …

    Remember when Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) discovered somewhere that there had been an announcement of his death? He then quipped, “The report of my death has been exaggerated.” This was in the year of 1897. Someone had heard that a certain James Ross Clemens, a cousin of Sam’s, had been ill for several weeks and died.

Recycle plastic bags and peanuts

I was following a pickup truck this morning that had a load of trash on the back. There appeared to be two drums in the bed of the truck, as well as some other materials. The drums had no covers and the load was not covered with a tarp.

This ‘N That

   Did you like the questions in our last article? It’s fun to think about where businesses were located “back in the day,” isn’t it? Strolling down the Main Street of years past brings back many memories for those of us who grew up here. Hopefully, it gives a flavor of Presque Isle’s history to people who are not from here, as well.

Reflecting on America

    This year, our nation celebrates the 400th anniversary of American shipbuilding, a birth that took place right here in Maine. When a small band of rugged English settlers at Popham Colony built the 30-ton Virginia in 1607, their goal was to demonstrate that they had the natural resources and the skilled hands to launch this vital industry in North America.
