Cup O’ Joe: Salute to area grads

High school gymnasiums are once again echoing the chords of “Pomp and Circumstance” as graduation ceremonies are taking center stage. Hodgdon and Katahdin celebrated their commencement exercises Friday and Saturday respectively. Houlton and East Grand confer diplomas Thursday evening, while Southern Aroostook Community School holds its ceremony Friday evening and Greater Houlton Christian Academy has its event Saturday morning.

More of Lesson 55: Just a simple smile

Much to my dismay, I found myself in the midst of a verbal confrontation with a sales clerk in a small shop. I had purchased a lamp and discovered a broken piece that could not be mended. This was the last lamp of that particular style and there were no plans to order more.

Lesson 55: Share your experience and your strength

For me and so many of my comrades, cancer is life altering. As blessed, warm weather approaches, I find myself trying on my summer tops with hesitation. Will people be able to identify the PowerPort on my lower right shoulder?

Newspaper archives are a genealogical gold mine

One of the most overlooked ways of filling in pieces of your family’s story is through old newspapers. The search has gotten much easier in the past 10 years thanks to the Internet, but even without it, great finds are possible.

Cup O’ Joe: At long last, warm weather has arrived

It has been a long time coming, but the warm weather has finally arrived. Many County residents spent this past weekend barbecuing, working in the yard or laying in a hammock underneath a shade tree, and rightfully so.
This past winter, with skyrocketing oil prices, was a tough one for many families. So it was somewhat refreshing to see temperatures soar Friday through Sunday, allowing windows to be thrown open and linens to be hung on the clothesline for that crisp, fresh air scent.

Lesson 16: There is nothing as strong as the bond between siblings

When my sister, Lisa, was born, I was nearly 14 years old and up until that point the only child of very doting parents. I was immediately aware of the imminent changes that were taking place now that my spot as the “only one” was taken by a crying, demanding, very needy baby girl who seemingly stole the hearts of the two people who had once given their hearts to me.

Cup O’ Joe: No call for underage drinking

Prom and graduation season are upon us. And while this is a time of celebration for many families, it is also a time where young “adults” can make some poor choices that could affect the rest of their lives.
Underage drinking tends to spike considerably at this time of year as high school students search for “after parties” from their time spent at proms or their graduation.

Overcome fear of foreign languages

If you are planning to bring your family history research back as far as possible, you are probably going to have to deal with a foreign language. In my case, I have to research mostly in Italian or Latin. I have Irish roots as well, but most Irish government records were written in Latin till about 1733; and after that in English. In Italy they were written in Italian or Latin, with the most “recent” (say 1790) government records in Italian.

Lesson 4: When you go exploring, let someone know!

My parents never forgot that warm spring morning I decided to do some exploring with my German Shepherd puppy, Rin Tin Tin, otherwise known as Rinty. We lived on the Jardine Farm, just outside of Crouseville. My father was working in the fields and my mother was hanging linens out to dry in the front yard.
