Rain alters fishing options

One more heavy thunderstorm and I’m going to be able to fish from my back deck. Another full day of steady rain and I might just be able to troll out behind my house.

More of Lesson 55: Share the stories of your life

I loved being with my father. Some days, he would pick me up in the company truck and we would travel to Fort Kent, via Route 161. We would snack on Drake’s Coffee Cake and chocolate milk, the interior of the truck glowing and warmed by the winter sunshine. He would talk with me about his life and though he did not speak often of the Korean War, he was proud of his military service.

A softball champ will be decided Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Porter Field in Houlton Community Park, while the Minors title is up for grabs Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Savings Bank of Maine Field next to Houlton Elementary School. Athletes in the Majors group will play for the town championship 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rotary Field, also near HES. The softball and Minors title games could go to a second “winner-take-all” game depending on their outcomes.

Cup O’ Joe: A tribute to dads

Father’s Day means different things to different people. For some, it is a day to spend quality time with their father doing the things that he enjoys the most. For others whose dads are no longer with them, it is a time of reflection, remembering the times spent together.

Life Lesson No. 1 revisited: Hold tightly to your father’s hand

My father departed from this earth on April 15, 1991, at the age of 61. The love that I have for my father is as powerful today as it was from the beginning. He was and will always be my companion, my guide, and the purest example of the word hero.
