Learning a lesson from Henry Ford

Exactly 100 years ago, Henry Ford shocked the business world by doubling his workers’ pay. Predictions of the collapse of the business were heard and his competitors were furious. But Ford understood that the ultimate success of his business depended upon customers who could afford to buy his cars – and he wanted his workers to be among those customers. And so it is today – our economy needs customers, workers with enough take-home pay to buy the goods and services that make our country run. I think it’s time to take a lesson from old Henry Ford.

Cup O’ Joe: Spring has finally sprung

It was a busy weekend in the Shiretown with the annual Southern Aroostook Trade Show drawing an estimated 1,600 people to the Millar Civic Center. This year’s show featured an impressive collection of 46 vendors, ranging from recreational vehicles, tools, ATV’s, lawn mowers, tractors, tires, windows, building trusses, motorcycles, nursery stock, digital marketing, crafts and tourism to name a few.

In this tough economy, making difficult choices when it comes to putting a budget together is something most every household can relate to. It has been a rough few years in northern Maine, and the outlook is not likely to feature a quick turnaround.
Therefore, school districts and municipalities are struggling mightily when it comes time to put a budget together. Every new purchase must go under a microscope to see if it is necessary, while new revenue streams need to be identified.

Maine has a robust and growing craft brewing industry, which employs more than 1,200 people. Our state is home to nearly 50 breweries producing quality beer from Bangor to Bar Harbor, Portland to Skowhegan, Biddeford to Whitefield and many communities in between.
