Beware of IRS scam during tax filing season

The phone rings. The caller ID displays “Internal Revenue Service,” “U.S. Department of the Treasury,” or the 202 Washington, D.C., area code. Concerned, the recipient of the call picks up the phone and is told that he or she owes back taxes to the IRS and must pay up immediately.

Life Lessons: Very early memories are often the strongest

Yellow balloons of all sizes, tied securely to ribbons of various lengths, bobbed haphazardly upward from the front of the cash register at the back entrance to the Sears store in Presque Isle. Each balloon was decorated with the face of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the presidential candidate for the year 1960. The opposing candidate, Richard Nixon, had no bouncy balloons or posters on display.

Happy Losers

On March 9 the weight group called The Happy Losers held their weekly meeting. Jackie Pratt, the leader, opened the meeting and welcomed members, followed by the pledge and roll call.

Recycling should be family affair

Last night at a meeting we heard a story about a woman who is passionate about recycling. She washes her plastic, rinses her cans, stacks her cardboard after flattening it, and her husband, who goes to town every single day, refuses to take it to the transfer station. The recyclables pile up, and eventually go into the trash.

When sweet revenge is cold!

We had a snowstorm a couple weeks ago that reminded me of an event that happened when I used to work in Easton. My best friend, who calls himself “my brother from another mother,” worked the same shift and we rode together.
