Municipal officials around Aroostook County say more than 50 people have signed what they thought was a petition to support a political party, but actually signed voter registration applications resulting in their unknowingly switching political parties.
Aroostook County Judge of Probate James P. Dunleavy passed away on December 10, 2023. In accordance with Maine law, Gov. Janet T. Mills will appoint a qualified individual to serve out the remainder of Judge Dunleavy’s term from a list provided by the County Committee of the judge’s political party.
City Councilor Gary Nelson was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Industrial Council during Wednesday night’s City Council meeting despite owning property in the Skyway Industrial Park.
The council meeting held at City Hall began with the swearing in of new City Council members Hank King and James Carroll.
The Caribou City Council named Courtney Boma mayor in a 5-2 vote. Boma replaces councilor Jody Smith in the role.
After being elected earlier this month, Matthew Cole said he wanted to help the town move forward amid conflicts that prevented the board from meeting several times.
Outgoing city councilors Lou Willey and Mark Goughan received special honors at Caribou City Council’s final meeting of the year.
As the presidential race between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump grows more intense, Interim Town Manager Alan Mulherin said he wants to ensure he and election clerks can safely monitor ballots and be protected from poll watchers if they become unruly.
The meeting was originally slated for Nov. 22, the evening before Thanksgiving, but the Select Board postponed it so that more members of the public could attend.
Voters elected resident Matthew Cole to fill the remaining term of Harold Tardy, the former board chairperson who resigned in September. Tardy was elected to a three-year term in March but stepped down due to health concerns.
