Caribou, New Sweden racers compete in Houlton’s derby — For the first time in four years, an out-of-town racer took the checkered flag in the Stock division of the Northern Maine Soap Box Derby Race held last Saturday on Drakes in Houlton.

Local trio earned accreditation — Denise Green and Julie Freeman of Presque Isle and Shellie Doody-Corriveau of Caribou, teachers at Aroostook Gymnastics in Caribou, had all attended the USA Gymnastics Kinder Accreditation for Teachers (KAT) Workshop, an important step in self-education.
June is Adopt-a-Cat Month. It’s also generally a month that marks the height of “kitten season,” when large litters of kittens are born and often end up in animal shelters.

Flowers Planted at Peace Pole – On May 27, second graders from Houlton Elementary School planted marigolds around the Peace Pole in Monument Park. Each child grew one plant from seed in the greenhouse at the school.
For the first time in several years, Midsommar began with sunshine instead of rain showers. The weather was fitting for the holiday, which originated in Sweden as a celebration of the summer solstice.

Eva Hoyt Zippel Elementary School held an assembly on June 6 to celebrate Kids Heart Challenge, during which students raised more than $17,000 for the American Heart Association.
