Mapleton man swims beyond ‘Tank’ with street surfboards

MAPLETON and HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Mapleton native Don Sandusky, the son of Terry and Susanne Sandusky and a University of Maine alumnus, is in the national spotlight once again.

The co-owner and manager of Hamboards — land surfboards designed to emulate the thrill of wave surfing — Sandusky appeared last night on ABC’s “Beyond the Tank,” in a follow-up to an initial appearance on “Shark Tank” in October 2013 with his cousin, Peter Hamborg, and Hamborg’s son Gus.

“We are peace people,” says John Cancelarich.

Cancelarich is a former producer of biological weapons during the Korean war era and now an anti-war protestor.

William McConnell celebrates 100th birthday

 

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Decades of fads slipped by him.

1950s teens had a burning love for Rock ‘n Roll. Hippies preached love during the ‘60s and disco music topped the charts in the ‘70s.

William (Bill) McConnell lived quietly alongside it all.

“I don’t think I ever got past the swing era.”

Stem cells give Presque Isle man back his sight

 

Doug Oliver knows what it’s like to go blind and see again, so he wants others to have the same opportunity.

“I’m seeing very well and am likely to enjoy this vision for the remainder of my lifetime,” said Oliver, a 1980 Presque Isle High School graduate who was diagnosed with a rare form of blindness 11 years ago. “I want people to know that treatment options for blindness are here now.”

Aroostook County says goodbye to Voscar

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — His images tell the stories of Aroostook County.

When John F. Kennedy came to town, he was there. When someone needed a wedding photographer, he was there. When wildlife roamed, he was there.

Adorned in a black wide-brimmed hat and never without his camera, Oscar S. Nelder was Voscar, The Maine Photographer. He died Wednesday, a little more than five months shy of his 90th birthday.
