Norsworthy leaves Beaver basketball post

WASHBURN, Maine — Randy Norsworthy, who guided the Washburn boys basketball team to eight consecutive Class D tournament appearances, is stepping down after nine years as the head coach.

Norsworthy, 59, cited family and job reasons for his decision. He is the owner of North County Auto, which has locations in Presque Isle, Houlton and Lincoln, and recently added a fourth dealership in Biddeford.

UMPI softball team continues fine season

The UMPI Owls’ softball team eclipsed the 20-win mark over the weekend. The team is now 21-11 with six games remaining and held on to the No. 3 ranking in the USCAA coaches poll.

Flag football meetings planned

Aroostook Huskies Football and SAD 1 have announced that they’ve partnered to start a flag football program for youth in grades 1-6 in central Aroostook County.

The new program kicks off with a series of meetings to introduce the program and identify parent leaders. Meetings (both from 7-8:30 p.m.) have been set up for the convenience of the community. Attending one meeting is sufficient and the remaining schedule is as follows: Monday, April 25 at Caribou Inn and Convention Center; and Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center.

PI girl takes fifth place in Elks national free throw event

Faith Sjoberg, the 11-year-old daughter of Kevin and Susan Sjoberg of Presque Isle, took fifth place in her division at the Elks’ National Hoop Shoot Competition held in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

The Presque Isle Middle School sixth-grader was competing against 11 other girls, ages 10 and 11, each of whom had won a competition for a large region of the United States.

International Appalachian Trail enthusiasts gathering in Presque Isle

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Cross Lake residents Cheryl and Kirk St. Peter are hoping that Aroostook County folks will take advantage of an upcoming meeting to learn more about an international hiking trail that crosses over the North Atlantic from Maine to Greenland, several European countries, and terminates in north Africa.

Cheryl St. Peter is the vice president of Maine’s International Appalachian Trail chapter while her husband Kirk serves on the board. The Maine chapter of the IAT is holding its annual meeting and program May 6-8, 2016 at the Presque Isle Inn & Convention Center.

Visitors to view Estey House by candlelight

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On Wednesday, May 4, 2016, the Presque Isle Historical Society will offer a special tour of the 1875 Vera Estey House Museum.

In celebration of what would be Estey’s 122nd birthday, the society will host a champagne and candlelight tour of the small, two-story Victorian-era house, beginning at 7 p.m. The guided tour will discuss the beginnings of Presque Isle, the history of the house, and its unique resident.
