Golf tourney to raise funds for breast cancer

     CARIBOU, Maine — The fourth annual Pink Aroostook Scramble golf tournament will be held at the Caribou Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 9 a.m.. with a rain date of Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016.

Full week of harness racing planned

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Harness racing begins at the Northern Maine Fair on Friday evening, July 29, 2016. Post time for this evening will be at 6 p.m. In addition to regular trotters and pacers, the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association has scheduled four legs of the Maine State Sires Stakes.

Martial artists get a kick at Graves annual tourney

     MARS HILL, Maine — Grand Master Bill Graves can hardly believe it’s been 25 years since his first Summer Kick Off Karate and Ju-Jitsu tournament took place. Back in 1991, there were well over a dozen karate competitions in Maine, but now only five remain and Graves’ event is the only one north of Bangor. Entering into his 49th year studying and teaching martial arts, Graves is proud and happy to host an event for a quarter century.

State law blocks energy aid

By Darren Fishell BDN Staff      PORTLAND — Aroostook and Washington counties will see no money from a new $3 million program to reduce power rates for “energy intensive” manufacturers, after regulators ruled the program only includes parts of the state that pay a premium on electricity to help reduce carbon emissions.

Conservation grant applications are due Aug. 19      BANGOR — The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced the application deadline date for two of its principal conservation programs — the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Agricultural Management Assistance Program (AMA).

1901: Caribou House gets new stone and brick foundation

115 Years Ago — July 31, 1901

New stone and brick — The Caribou House now fronts on High Street and rests on its new stone and brick foundation. The house is being newly shingled and one of the old chimneys has been taken down and will be replaced by a new one. The frame for a new shed added to the house is up.
