Awards honor Collins for legislative efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maine Sen. Susan Collins has received four national awards recently for her work on behalf of emergency medical and fire workers, the homeless, small business, and for her efforts toward bipartisanship in Congress.

In Scarborough, the president of the Maine Ambulance Association, Tim Beals, presented her with the American Ambulance Association’s Legislator of the Year Award in recognition of her work on behalf of the fire service.

Vikes fell to 1-7-1 on season after loss to Crusaders

The Caribou girls played to a scoreless tie Saturday in a road match against John Bapst, and are now 6-2-1 and in fourth place in the Class B North division.

In the game played at Husson University in Bangor, Kerrigan Manter had six saves on 11 shots and Kayla Massey seven saves on 13 shots as the teams battled through 80 minutes of regulation and 10 more of overtime without a goal being scored. John Bapst is now at 8-1-1 and in sixth place.

Competition fierce in Caribou rec soccer

Brazil vs. Columbia

Brazil had many goal scorers in this Aug. 31 matchup with Columbia, with Alex Levesque, Dylan Bouchard, Jaden Picard and Jacob Walton all getting into the action. Bouchard and Konnor Huckins had an assists. It was a team effort in offensive passing that lead to many of the goals. Brazil received good defensive stops by Tyra Sterner, Keegan Bell, Justin Walton and Macie Towson. Brazil’s goalies, Jaden Picard, Calvin Hersey and Jace Violette, saved many of Columbia scoring chances.

McElwain captures Maine Marathon title

Spencer McElwain, a Caribou native now residing in Arundel, won the Maine Marathon, held Sunday in Portland.

McElwain finished in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 36 seconds, which was 49 seconds clear of runner-up Taylor Days-Merrill of Fairhaven, Mass.

The win put McElwain in distinct company as he joined Evan Graves of Caribou and Maninda Marube of Auburn as the only individuals to win both the Maine Marathon and the Maine Half Marathon.

Owls earn sweep of homecoming matches

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine  — Homecoming weekend was a successful one for the University of Maine at Presque Isle soccer teams as they were able to sweep past Unity in the Saturday doubleheader played at Park Family Field.

The UMPI women won in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winning goal with time winding down for a 2-1 victory over the Unity Rams.

Newcomers show promise for UMPI women

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s soccer team entered the season with high expectations. With many key returners and a plethora of newcomers, fifth-year head coach Trevor Parent hopes his Owls can improve on its 5-9-1 record from a year ago.

The Owls return one of their top scoring threats from 2015 in Sam Nadeau, a junior from St. David, who scored five goals and had five assists to lead the team in points (15). She earned AD3I All-Independent first team honors despite an injury-shortened season.

Autumn leads to a shotgun shell shake up

Fifty years ago when I was growing up in a small Aroostook County town, if a hunter needed shells or even a new or used gun, he went to the local hardware store. If it was a really tiny hamlet, surrounded mostly by woods or farmland, often a single convenience store served the widespread, rural population. From penny candy to nails and There were 50-cent boxes of .22s for plinking and killing rats, rifle shells for deer and a few boxes of shotgun shells to put partridge or rabbit in the stew pot, which they also sold.

Championing rural health: Our top priorities

FORT KENT, Maine — Changing incentives under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and value-based reimbursement to keep people healthy and out of acute care settings have prompted discussion of the state’s top health priorities.

The Maine Centers for Disease Control, local hospitals and partners set goals to improve rural health, including the development of health improvement plans. To obtain public input, a series of public engagement sessions was held in Aroostook County from October 2015 through March 2016.
