Hopkins earns student of the quarter award

LIMESTONE, Maine — Officials with the Loring Job Corps Center have announced Andrew Hopkins as the Star Student of the Quarter. Hopkins joined the Loring team from Newburgh, N.Y. in April 2014. Since his arrival he has proven that he is a goal-oriented young man with a desire to not only better himself but everyone around him.

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Winter Weather Sky Clue & Safety Workshop with WAGM Chief Meteorologist Ted Shapiro on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 2-4 p.m. in Folsom Hall Room 105. Campus and community members of all ages are invited to attend this free event.

Cows and dew, what’s it to you?

Well, we’re getting to the time of year where we’ll soon be on the lookout for winter storms. Conveniently, there are two nifty signs, provided by M. Nature, that tell you whether hazardous winter weather may be approaching. Now both of these clues pertain to multi-hour periods of precipitation, that are typically preceded by those high, thin, wispy clouds, called cirrus, but also known as Mare’s Tails, because they look like the flowing tail of a horse.

Broken silence: A story of domestic violence

    She sat gazing out at the field by her home. The grass blowing in rhythm to the breeze as the sun angled in such disposition that it created a haze in the distance with a variation of multiple colors in the sky beyond. She continued to file down her nails evenly because, if not, her husband Tom would express his blunt opinion of how horrible her hands look. She must always look her best to make her husband happy.

HSUS laughing all the way to the bank

To the editor:
After reading Norma Milton’s recent letter, “Real Sportsman don’t … “, I felt compelled to respond. I’ve hunted the Maine Woods since the early 1950s, when Maine had a bounty on black bear and I’ve hunted sections of the states of Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida over the years since. I must say that The Maine Woods are unique, in that it is one of the hardest places to hunt, as evident by its low harvest rate of game animals, given the size of the territory.
