S.W. Collins Home Design Center takes on all projects

    CARIBOU, Maine — With the fall season in full swing, we’ve reached a time of the year when home improvement is at the forefront of many peoples’ minds. As we move well into October, the leaves have already begun to change, and autumn has ushered in a new batch of bright colors to the Aroostook County scenery. As homeowners begin raking up the freshly fallen leaves, some may also be pondering the possibility of a home improvement that will provide a fresh look and feel to their homes, as all those residing in Aroostook County gear up for another harsh winter.

The season to raise awareness of senior falls

As Mainers, we appreciate the beauty of all four seasons in our state. There is nothing more spectacular, however, than fall in Maine with our fresh, crisp autumn air, harvest festivals, and foliage so brilliant that it attracts countless out-of-state visitors to take in the beauty that we see in our own backyards.

Visitors Information Center vital to entire county

    The Visitors Information Center (VIC) for Aroostook County is located in its county seat, the “Shire Town” of Houlton. Situated just off Interstate 95 in an inviting, wooded setting conveniently located near gas stations, motels, grocery stores and a Wal-Mart, the VIC is also in close proximity to downtown Houlton and its shops, restaurants and a beautiful downtown park near the library. It provides a safe place to for travelers to stop to rest, obtain information on places to go and see, walk their dogs, use the clean and well-maintained restrooms, and even access the free WiFi, too.

Walk To End Abuse

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and as a part of the month, Hope & Justice Project is hosting a walk to end abuse called Walk It Up, Presque Isle! on Friday, Oct. 17. Hope & Justice Project is the domestic violence resource center for Aroostook County.

Environmental ‘progress’ on the Aroostook: 2002-14

    In Maine, surface waters must be suitable for “designated beneficial uses ”including habitat for fish and other aquatic life, fishing, recreation in and on the water, drinking water (after treatment), and agriculture (subject to withdrawal limits). Diluting wastewater is not a designated use. Point-source industrial and municipal dischargers must be licensed (for five years, renewable) by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) to protect the aforementioned uses.
