Graves’ students dominate tournament

  HOULTON, Maine — As satisfying as winning an award can be, receiving a trophy in front of family and the hometown crowd is a truly fulfilling accomplishment. An eye opening number of regional martial artists from various branches of Graves Institute of Self Defense enjoyed just such an experience recently at the 23rd annual Summer Kick-Off Karate and Ju-Jitsu Tournament, held at Houlton High School.

Lund key runner at national meet

Freshmen Saul Nunez and Trevor Levesque, both of Presque Isle, led the Owls to a 14th-place finish at the USCAA National Cross Country Meet Friday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y.
Nunez finished the 8K course with a time of 30:11 and Levesque was right on his heels with a time of 30:23. The rookie duo each recorded their personal bests and finished 60th and 62nd, respectively, out of a field of 186 finishers.

Jones makes motorsports hall of fame

Spud Speedway’s “Door to Door Since ‘64” 50th anniversary awards banquet was held Saturday, featuring a “story swapping hour,” followed by the dinner and award presentations.

Doak receives Butch Shaw award

Caribou High School senior midfielder Sarah Doak is the recipient of the “Butch” Shaw Award for Class B girls.
The award is presented annually by the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials to an Aroostook County soccer player in Class B, C and D who is an outstanding player and also exemplifies the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.

League recognizes All-Aroostook fall athletes

The Aroostook League has developed an awards program for their member schools to honor athletes as “All-Aroostook” for their accomplishments during the fall season.
All-Aroostook soccer players are selected by a vote of the coaches while golf and cross country honorees are selected by criteria established by the Aroostook League. Athletes are awarded an All-Aroostook certificate.
