Caribou native is Monson town manager

MONSON, Maine — A former Caribou resident with a background in municipal and state government operations as well as outdoor recreation is the new Monson town manager.
Lucas Butler officially started his full-time duties on Nov. 12, 2014 although he spent one or two days a week in the town office prior to finding housing in town.

NMDC funding targets spoiled sites

    CARIBOU, Maine — The Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC) held their executive board of directors meeting on Thursday in the NMDC board room.
Prior to the meeting, a special lunch was served for the board members in attendance, which began at 11:45 a.m. in order to make sure everyone was fully nourished before the meeting commenced.

First responders, others learn autism safety

    Eastern Aroostook RSU 39 and their Awe-tism Connections Team, along with the Caribou, Limestone and Stockholm Special Education Departments, hosted their first-ever Autism Safety Education Training (ASET) on Monday at the Caribou Performing Arts Center. The program was sponsored in part by RSU 39, Cary Medical Center, Aroostook Chiefs of Police and the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department.

Grand Jury News

    The Aroostook County grand jury completed its fifth session of 2014 on Oct. 9 and handed down 35 indictments against 33 individuals without any “no bills.”    Among those indicted were:    Michael Doucette, 28, Van Buren: operating after revocation; assault (two counts); and ATV accident with personal injury.

AARP tour in The County a success

To the editor:
On behalf of AARP Maine, I would like to thank The Aroostook Medical Center and Aroostook Agency on Aging who worked with us to host the AARP Maine Voter Engagement Tour recently. We held community conversations in Caribou, Ft. Kent, and Madawaska. I also want to thank the hundreds of County residents, many of whom are AARP members, who generously shared their thoughts and concerns during these events.

Taxes – local government does it backwards

    As a new year approaches a business owner must prepare a budget for their business. Decisions must be made as to how many workers will be employed, what compensation can be afforded for those employed, will new equipment be needed, and if the business is sales oriented, how much inventory will be needed. However, a successful business owner cannot begin the budget with these thoughts. Where does the process begin? The first decision must be to determine the amount of revenue (sales) that will be created. The revenue must exceed the expenditures or the business will eventually fail.
