Recent events on the Aroostook River: 2002-14

    In Maine, surface waters must be suitable for “designated beneficial uses” including habitat for fish and other aquatic life, fishing, recreation in and on the water, drinking water (after treatment), and agriculture (subject to withdrawal limits). Diluting wastewater is not a designated use. Point-source industrial and municipal dischargers must be licensed by Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) to protect the aforementioned uses.

It is often said that great crisis and great tragedy can bring out the very best in who we are as a people. No one could have imagined the experience that Cary Medical Center’s emergency room staff and other hospital personnel were going to have the morning of November 20th.

Stemming the tide of phone scams

    As the Ranking Member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, it has been among my top priorities to shed light on and help put a stop to telephone scams, particularly those targeting our nation’s seniors. Working alongside the Committee’s current Chairman, Bill Nelson (D-FL), over the past two years, we have held eight hearings to examine these scams that have victimized far too many Americans.

Farewell column

   After 12 years in the Legislature, I am retiring from Legislative Service. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the hardworking people of northern Aroostook County first as your State Representative and then as your State Senator. Throughout my time in Augusta, I have never forgotten why I serve or where I came from.

Caring community response to tragedy

To the editor:
Just weeks after two fatal fires in the southern part of our state, Aroostook County sadly experienced one of our own, when an early morning blaze on Thursday, Nov. 20, cut short the lives of four young people. The devastating news of the losses has shaken our community and serves as a somber reminder of fire’s devastating potential.

Drive4UrSchool event benefits Athletic Boosters

    CARIBOU — Over one-hundred folks test-drove new Ford vehicles during the fall 2014 Drive4UrSchool event organized by Griffeth Ford to benefit the Caribou Athletic Boosters, which was held on Sept. 27.
