Gauvin scholars wrap up first semesters

The year of firsts came to an official close for Aroostook Aspirations Initiative (AAI) on Dec. 31, and the 2014 Gauvin Scholars finished up their first college semesters.
The organization released funds this week to award the $1,000 scholarships for the Scholars’ second semester tuition costs and presented checks to each of three postsecondary institutions, University of Maine at Presque Isle, University of Maine at Fort Kent, and Northern Maine Community College. Husson University is also a postsecondary partner of the organization.

Two New Year’s Day babies delivered at Cary

Aroostook County’s first baby born in the new year, Lydia Rae Doughty, was born at Cary Medical Center on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 at 7:48 a.m. to parents, Amy Lagasse and Ray Doughty of Frenchville.

Aging-friendly housing and a brew pub: two new businesses coming to Caribou

    CARIBOU, Maine — Two of the economic development ideas born of the Caribou Economic Growth Council — an apartment facility to accommodate aging individuals and a brewery — could break ground in the city this year. Both ideas were conceptualized during early morning and late-night meetings of CEGC members and adopted by investors looking to give the businesses life; board member of the CEGC Sean Pelletier described the process as a bunch of businessmen sitting around an easel with the goal of thinking up five ideas that could work.

Ferguson: What should we learn?

    The shooting death of a young man, Michael Brown, by law enforcement in Ferguson, Missouri is a tragedy that is receiving widespread coverage by various news outlets. The young man robbed a convenience store, assaulted the storekeeper, and assaulted a police officer; and as a result in the space of 30 minutes from start to finish, he was lying dead in the street. Parents have lost a son, a city has become enraged, a policeman’s life has been ruined, and the rule of law has been challenged.

Students invited to serve as honorary Senate pages

AUGUSTA, Maine — Sen. Mike Willette (R-Aroostook) invites local students to visit the statehouse to take part in the Senate’s honorary page program during the first session of the 127th Legislature, which convenes in January.
