1990: Maine Veterans Home holds grand opening

100 Years Ago-Jan. 7, 1915

• Run for flour — Flour prices are “sufficiently near $10 a barrel.” Smith & Lufkin of Sweden St. advertise, “Have you started in the ‘buy a barrel of flour’ movement? If not, you better start right now because we have a hunch that this great necessity of life will be higher before it is any lower in price.” “Better buy a barrel now before the raise,” say merchants Shaw & Mitton.
• Party — Miss Evelyn Hussey very pleasantly entertained a number of her young friends at her home on High Street Wednesday afternoon, the occasion being her birthday. Miss Hussey was presented with a handsome sliced lemon server as a souvenir of the pleasant event.

Exploring the world one classroom at a time

CARIBOU, Maine — The “Cultures Around the World” event at Teague Park on Dec. 23, 2014 was so well received, staff is considering making it an annual event.
Students only had a half day on the 23rd — right before the big vacation — but teachers came up with a way to use that short time with worthwhile and meaningful education.

Invaluable asset to our community

To the editor:
As an occupational therapist working for Cary Medical Center, I see many members of the community following traumatic injury, elective surgeries or cumulative work-related diseases. Early last year the community of Caribou received a gift by the name of Mark Perlmutter, MD.

Book offers ‘real’ life lessons

To the editor:
At the Maine annual nursing home conference last fall, guest speaker Karl Pillemer, Ph.D. (a gerontologist) discussed his latest book “30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans” that was the compilation of five years of interviewing thousands of senior citizens about their advice about living for younger adults. I bought the book and just finished reading it and compiled the 30 lessons discussed in the book (below). There’s a lot of wisdom represented in the list and I thought I’d share it with the public.

Aroostook has potential for extraordinary growth

    2014 was an extremely busy year for the Aroostook Partnership for Progress in a number of areas including “Education to Industry” initiatives, growing the forest economy, manufacturing, and advancing diversified agriculture through the great efforts of our exceptional working groups. In addition, APP hosted its third Alternative Energy and Biomass Fair, the Export/Trade Seminar during the World Acadian Congress and supported multiple prospective economic development projects such as rail car manufacturing at Loring and the Maine Malt House at Buck Farms.

Hannaford partners with health insurance co-op for $0 co-pay

    LEWISTON — Officials with the nonprofit health insurance co-op Maine Community Health Options (MCHO) recently announced a partnership with Maine-based Hannaford Pharmacies designed to provide MCHO members with $0 copay for all generic medications.
