Secession committee preparing petition for submission

CARIBOU, Maine — The five leaders of the Caribou Secession Committee are preparing to submit a petition to the City Council that will begin the process of breaking the community into two parts — the proposed Town of Lyndon, which would encompass 80 percent of Caribou’s current rural mass, and 20 percent of the municipality around the downtown area to remain the city of Caribou.
The secession process is a long one, requiring a local public hearing followed by state senate authorization before the idea is brought back to the city for a local vote on the matter. It’s a long road, and Secession Committee members are getting ready to take one more step down it.

Rescue and rehabilitation takes time

To the editor:
It has been a busy year for Halfway Home Pet Rescue volunteers. There has clearly been increased demand for our services. Other shelters and towns are seeking help by referring callers to HHPR.
Perhaps the increased demand is because we do all age-appropriate medical care before adoption. Perhaps it’s because HHPR’s mission includes the rehabilitation for injured or emotionally damaged cats (abused and/or grossly neglected).

Let me help you through the winter

Conditions across Aroostook County varied tremendously over very short distances. West Chapman saw 4 1/2 inches of fluff, while just a short distance away there was only a dusting.

Leadership come from within

To the editor:
Even though we have a City Council that is supposed to run the affairs of the community, we do not have members who have been in business for themselves and must put together a budget of some means to make sure that the business continues to flourish.

100 Years Ago-Jan. 14, 1915

• Grange supper — At the grange Saturday evening an early supper was served to about one hundred in number, after which the officers for the new year were installed by Fred Spear, assisted by Forest Mason. Music was furnished by Beanett’s orchestra, assisted by Laura Noyes and Warren Noyes. A good time was enjoyed by all present.
• Frozen commodity — Gould Crouse [of Crouseville] is cutting ice at Haynes’ Bordeaux and he will supply the farmers with all the ice they need in Crouseville, Cross Road, Mapleton, Washburn, Presque Isle or Caribou.

Travesty of justice in Aroostook County

To the editor:
I am writing to inform you of a travesty of justice that has taken place in Aroostook County. On Oct. 3, 2014 my father-in-law, Donald “Duke” Martin, of Portage Lake was struck by a motor vehicle while in a crosswalk in the Shop ‘n Save parking lot in Presque Isle. He suffered a severe head injury that day and died a week later in a Bangor hospital.
