UMPI women improving

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Lady Owls are 4-5 over their last nine games but are playing better with the addition of two key seniors, Brigitte Pratt and Krista Coffin. The newcomers add toughness, intelligence and size to a young and inexperienced squad that had to replace more than 80 percent of last season’s scoring and rebounding.

Regular season ending in basketball

The final Heal Point basketball standings will become official this weekend, with some local teams finding out who their opponent will be in the preliminary playoff round (next Tuesday and Wednesday), others drawing a bye directly into the Eastern Maine Tournament at the Cross Center in Bangor, which begins Feb. 13, and a handful seeing their seasons come to an end.

Fire claims life of Caribou man

    CARIBOU, Maine — Fire swept through a mobile home at 100 Dow Siding Road on Monday morning, claiming the life of a young Caribou man.
Jordan McEwen was found by firefighters in a bedroom of the mobile home shortly after 10 a.m., having succumbed to smoke inhalation.
