Saving for higher education

    In President Obama’s recent State of the Union Address, he outlined an agenda focused on what he called middle class economics, which he described as providing Americans with the ‘‘tools they needed to go as far as their effort and their dreams will take them.’’ Our country thrives when hard-working Americans prosper. The President was right to praise policies, such as the GI bill and Social Security, that have helped us to do just that.

Let’s work together to boost winter recreation in Maine

    While snow can sometimes be a hassle, it is also part of the Maine tourism economy. The snow and cold are a lifeline for so many of these communities around the state. It’s what many rural communities depend on to draw visitors from elsewhere in Maine as well as from outside the state.

1940: Governor visits Caribou Winter Carnival

100 Years Ago-Feb. 4, 1915

• On Groundhog Day — Tuesday was Candlemas Day, and, of course, the groundhog ceased his half winter hibernation on scheduled time. He is as sure to awaken on the second day of the second month of the year as an Aroostook winter is of cold weather.
• Good ol’ days — There was a time when we did not have any telephones; we were more content then than now, nor did we have the daily R.F.D. but walked or drove to the post office for the mail once a week, perhaps oftener.

Next Generation Foundation invests in Aroostook Aspirations Initiative

    PRESQUE ISLE — Officials with the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative (AAI) say 2015 will bring a new program for the organization. Thanks to a generous award from the Next Generation Foundation, AAI will start work immediately on an Aroostook Hub for Internships.
