Captain Sperry retires after 46 years with the Caribou Fire Department

    CARIBOU, Maine — Steve Sperry was spending so much time at the fire department as a teenager, so the story goes, that they hired him.
“They told him he was around so much he might as well be a part of the department,” passed along Caribou Fire Chief Scott Susi.
Sperry’s 46-year tenure at the fire department meant an opportunity for the captain to touch the lives of community members and fellow firefighters in his own modest way.

High winds cause whiteout conditions

    CARIBOU, Maine — Whiteout conditions produced by Monday’s high winds caused accidents up and down the county — six in Caribou alone.
A Van Buren couple was seriously injured during whiteout conditions on U.S. Route 1 when their car crashed headon with a tractor-trailer.

Roller Derby hitting the region

    LIMESTONE, Maine — Members of the all-female Aroostook Roller Derby (ARD) started the new year with a scrimmage victory over the co-ed Katahdin Roller Kings (KRK) at 190-184 — a good game and a necessary learning experience for the two young teams.

Northern Maine Community College

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Two hundred six (206) full-time students achieved a 3.20 average or better at Northern Maine Community College during the fall semester. Twenty-nine students had the distinction of earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average in addition to being named to the High Honors list, including local students Matthew Cox, Richard Mullen, Erica Nadeau, Cheryl Tarr, Anjanette Walsh and Michele Wilcox, all of Caribou. Also earning a 4.0 was Jesse Henderson and Cheryl Marchand, both of Limestone, and Jesse Cormier of Van Buren.
