AutoZone plans store in Presque Isle

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A national auto parts distributor is looking to open a branch in the Star City by 2016.
“AutoZone plans to open a store in Presque Isle in January of next year. This will be one of about 150 AutoZone stores opening up in 2016,” said Ray Pohlman, company spokesperson.

Graves karate students take trophies in Bucksport tourney

BUCKSPORT, Maine — Martial arts students from regional branches of Graves’ Institute of Self Defense recently traveled south to compete in a tournament recently.
Along with the normal sparring and Ju-Jitsu divisions, this Bucksport event featured grand championship fighting open only to competitors who had won a first-, second- or third-place award at a previous 2014 event. Only one huge three-foot trophy was awarded to the winner of each championship division as a best-of-the-best incentive.

Teams advance in tourney prelims

Caribou boys outgun Belfast, 58-54, in Class B showdown

    All three local basketball teams advanced to the Eastern Maine Tournament following preliminary round action held last Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Caribou boys survived a test against Belfast, while both Fort Fairfield teams were also winners in their home contests.

Old Town spoils Viking tourney hopes

    BANGOR, Maine — Old Town carved up Caribou with its own double-edged sword on Friday night.
Senior forward Adam Richardson and senior guard Eric Hoogterp combined for 49 points on 20-for-30 shooting, sparking the defending state champion Coyotes to a 64-55 Eastern Maine Class B boys basketball victory at the Cross Insurance Center.

School board gets update on Woodland Consolidated

    WOODLAND, Maine — Woodland Consolidated School Principal Susie Schloeman and Union 122 Superintendent Karla Michaud presented their reports at this month’s Woodland School board meeting, complete with a list of activities the school was involved in over the past month.
Woodland received the Northern Maine Math League scores for the fall of 2014, and grade six placed fifth out of eight, grade seven placed sixth out of eight, and grade eight placed sixth out of eight; the Woodland team placed fifth out of nine teams overall.
