Frosty nights yield feathered creations

MAINELY OUTDOORS

    Aroostook County experienced this winter’s first snowfall on Nov. 1, since then seldom a week has passed without either more snow or frigid temperatures. By my calculations that’s over four months of cold misery and I don’t need any furry rodent and its shadow to predict a couple more bleak months. A lot of days are so miserable I’ve no interest in venturing out ice fishing or rabbit hunting and if it weren’t for a hobby or two I’d go stir crazy with cabin fever!

BDN all-tourney selections recognized

Presque Isle’s Hannah Graham, Washburn’s Mackenzie Worcester and Fort Fairfield’s Chris Giberson were named MVPs of their respective divisions in the recently-concluded Eastern Maine basketball tournament.
All three also headlined the Bangor Daily News all-tournament teams, which are selected by a vote of media, tournament personnel and Maine Principals’ Association representatives.

Radio station names All-County squads

The second annual WHOU All-County Basketball Team was recently announced.
The Houlton-based radio station had the chance to stream more than 80 games online this season and see some talented players in action.

Landmark eatery gets a facelift

    CARIBOU, Maine — Renovations to the Burger Boy restaurant in Caribou are complete. Owner Spenser Ouellette says this may lead to Burger Boy staying open year-round.
“Burger Boy was in need of a facelift. Built in 1968 the exterior of the building hasn’t been touched since,” Ouellette said.

Mother Nature favors Caribou’s downtown ski festival

    CARIBOU, Maine — Skiers young and old took to the trails in Caribou over the weekend at the Caribou Ski Center and Caribou Country Club.
What was once a multi-weekend downtown event has evolved into a two-day festival with the Caribou Ski Frolic on Saturday and the annual Henry Anderson Ski Dag on Sunday.

Pop-Up museum brings WWII history to high shool

A World War II museum is coming to Caribou on Wednesday, March 11, comprised of local artifacts placed on display by students.
Held in the lower library of the Caribou High School, artifacts on display are slated to be everything from helmets and uniforms to Christmas letters and ration coupon books — even a laundry box used to ship clothing and personal items back home.

Program connects crime fighters and kids

    CARIBOU, Maine — Rep. Carol McElwee (R-Caribou) and County law enforceers met at the Caribou Head Start Center Monday where they took time to socialize with young children.
Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan and Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall are part of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids. An anti-crime organization, Fight Crime’s goal is to expose young children to law enforcement. They believe their early influence will encourage good behavior and help prevent future criminal activity.
