Babies and Books program at the Caribou Public Library

The “Babies and Books” program was started in 2000 by previous Children’s Librarian Jean Shaw, Friends of Caribou Public Library and Cary Medical Center. This program is for children birth to age one.

MDOT approves multiple access route connecting ATV trails

    PORTAGE LAKE, Maine — Over the past year, efforts between the Portage Lake and Eagle Lake ATV clubs has resulted in a new ATV access route along Route 11.
The Portage Lake ATV Club has been unable to connect a path leading them to the Eagle Lake ATV trail. They’ve spent months working towards securing an access route, about a mile and a half along Route 11.

SCHMIDT — A boy, King Daryl Schmidt, born to Desneiges A.M. Cole of Caribou on Feb. 2, 2015.
BOUCHARD — A boy, Maverick David Bouchard, born to Cassandra and Christopher Bouchard of Caribou on Feb. 3, 2015.
MORIN —  A boy, Francis Xavier Morin, born to Keren and Corey Morin of Caribou on Feb. 4, 2015.

MSSM’s Ostermann receives Principal’s Award

LIMESTONE, Maine — Grier Ostermann of Topsham, a senior at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics, has been selected to receive the 2015 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

Council draws criticism on foreclosed property bids

    CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou City Councilors took criticism during their last meeting for the way they’re handling properties the city acquires after owners have failed to pay taxes for three years.
Caribou residents who’d had their properties foreclosed upon due to failure to pay taxes were given about four days to come up with the long overdue funds or lose their homes earlier this year, and one such foreclosed property was returned to its owner after TD Bank — who owns the mortgage on the Hammond Street address — interjected with a request to pay the costs by Friday, March 13.

Spring starts on Friday

Spring starts on Friday; apparently the weather forecast didn’t get the memo.
Last night’s predicted snowfall of 8-10 inches and this weekend’s anticipated snow or rain showers will bookend Spring’s arrival, and meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Caribou have been painting a pretty chilly picture for the rest of March.

New potato variety has Caribou roots

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine and the Maine Potato Board (MPB) have released a new potato variety — Caribou russet. The Caribou russet was tested under the research identification number AF3362-1, and resulted from a cross between Silverton russet and Reeves kingpin.

Essay contest winners honored at VFW Post 9389

    CARIBOU, Maine — Local winners of the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy student essay contests were honored last week at VFW Post 9389 in Caribou.
Both annual nationwide contests encourage young students to share their views of United States veterans in the form of an essay. Post 9389 had over 100 middle school and high school students participate in this year’s contests.
